My first Hackaton began on Friday through Sunday, Feb 8 -10.
THE PLATFORM MY TEAM CAME UP WITH
THE PROBLEM
We had to come up with a solution to solve social isolation of older adults.
Social isolation occurs when older adults do not have enough people to interact with.
One possibility for choosing not to go out into the community is not having enough information being accessible regarding new things to do or deals in the community- outside their routine. There was too much information online, yet not presented under one hub for older adults to access.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
People are creatures of habit. However, with the introduction to new and exciting things around their community, we hope to inspire them to rediscover this and attend events, discover restaurants and shop local, all accessible by public transit.
CONNECTED COMMUNITY
We wanted to start first with one city. And prototype the platform with hope of them expanding to seniors across the GTA and eventually in Ontario by providing timely information about discounts offered to them in the community and local business they would be interested in.
Including: local diners, pharmacies, retail stores.
- Encourage Older Adults to explore the new aspects of their community
- Focused on public transit as the tool:
- Offers free rides on certain days
- a primary way to go shopping, events, and any mean of social interaction
Our platform offers a point system to motivate and make it fun for a user to do different activities. Every day the user is provided with 4 different challenges to choose from, based on the preferences they liked when they signed up.
The challenges are as simple as petting a dog or going to a local theatre on a discount day.
After completing the challenge the user taps the box and is given a point reward.
Points accumulate and mark different milestones that are shared within the community of people using the app.
RESEARCH
Below are pages from the research we conducted to come up with solution.

MY EXPERIENCE
Coming up with a solution within 36 hrs was challenging. Doing the research, designing the whole system, deciding on technology, user interface – these things take months! I’m so proud how much we accomplished in such a short timeframe.
