Gamifying the car-buying experience

My Role

  • As a Lead Product Designer I was leading a team of 3 other designers. I was working on main designs and experiences, Interviews, wireframing, personas and user journeys.
  • Mentorship – As the lead designer with the most experience, I took on the responsibility of mentoring my less experienced team members and assisted them in improving their designs by providing encouraging and constructive feedback.

Explorative Interviews

In order to learn more about our target audience and the automotive industry, I spoke with people who work in it. I was very curious about how things were done and how they were working at the time. I inquired about the objectives and areas of interest as well as the challenges and advantages of their work in the automotive industry. I transcribed the recordings and analyzed the texts to organize the information.

Empathy map

I created empathy maps using what I had learned from interviews to capture the user from a different angle.

Persona/user profile

I used Mural and sticky notes to quickly create multiple persona profiles that represented our target groups.

Sketching

Before making any final designs, I would sketch them on my iPad

Storyboarding

I love creating storyboards! I used them to map user journey and to help generate ideas for other team’s projects.

Planning & Prototyping

My go-to tools for brainstorming and idea generation are sticky notes and Mural. I can make as many boards for analysis, brainstorming, and even rapid prototyping as I need because in Mural I have an endless supply of sticky notes. Before switching to XD, I spent a lot of time working on the Autoly app and using Mural to help me generate ideas.

Mural is a tool I introduced to our startup workflow, and it has significantly increased our productivity, team communication, and workflow in general.

Final Designs & Scalability

One of the features of the Autoly app is the capability for users to add their cars and design unique garage settings for each vehicle. Users can add as many vehicles as they want.

As a team, we decided that the garage should always be vertical to avoid having the user to change how they hold their phone, which made designing this feature tough. The interface also needed to have a selection with numerous options.

One of the main characteristics of the application is its ability to scale at different levels. Here, the user can take a picture of their warning light and use AI-powered image recognition to identify the problem with their car. The UI covers any possible case.

Gamification

The gamification part of UX work on Autoly was a lot of fun.

My team and I came up with a variety of scenarios and possibilities to reward users for opening and using the app.

What I’ve learned?

I had the chance to present fresh designs to the teams as the lead designer. Because of that, I’ve become better at explaining design decisions to audiences with a wider range of perspectives.

I became more adept at time management as a result of the numerous responsibilities I had to manage and the fact that some of my team members were located in various time zones.

The most crucial lesson I took away from Autoly was the process of how to build a mobile app from scratch. It was enlightening to learn what it entails and how long it takes.
